Human Rights Conference Coordinator
13 weeks, from June 5th through August 31st
30 hours/week at $10/hour

Organization: WPIRG is a student funded and directed environmental and social justice organization based at the University of Waterloo.

Background: WPIRG views human rights as one the integral values of the organization, and recognizes the need for increased awareness and
discussion of their global and domestic importance. In an effort to facilitate this, WPIRG has begun an annual Human Rights Conference at the University of Waterloo. The first of these was well received and WPIRG would like to follow its success with a conference of greater outreach and dialogue.

Duties: Under the direction of the conference organizing committee, this position will be responsible for the development, planning and
promotion of the Human Rights Conference for autumn 2007. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching conference focus areas, soliciting participation from specialists in these focus areas, recruiting and managing volunteers, planning the outline of the event and writing and designing promotional materials. Other tasks as required.

Eligibility:
this position is made possible by funding under the
Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) initiative. Applicants must be students
meeting the following criteria:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusively) at the start of the
employment;
- have been registered as a full-time student in the previous
academic year, and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in
the next academic year;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee
protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee
Protection Act; and,
- be legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial
legislation and regulations;

3) Short Essay (1 page maximum) describing a particular human rights issue and how it might be included and explored as part of the conference.
