The OPIRG Kingston Board of Directors is typically comprised of 7 individual volunteers. The majority of our directors are Queen’s students, but we also encourage participation from Queen’s faculty, staff and community members.
The board is our highest-level decision-making body and is responsible for most of the major decisions at OPIRG Kingston. Monetary decisions, staff supervision, legal responsibilities, long-term planning and goal setting are all part of the ongoing work of the Board of Directors.
Each board member is required to commit to stay at least one year on the board, to take on one portfolio, to attend bi-weekly meetings, and to put in at least two hours of work per week fulfilling their board duties.
Board Portfolios
The intention of the portfolios is to prioritize work that OPIRG Kingston needs done by the board of directors and to help new directors find out how they can connect with and contribute to the organization. This work reflects the priorities of the organization, which may change from time to time. Current portfolios are:
- Funding committee - funding@opirgkingston.org
- Working group liaison and volunteer coordination
- Staff/board liaison
- Publicity and outreach
- Provincial representative
- Treasurer/Finances
- Events
- Policy
- Research
- Fundraising
As well, there are ad hoc committees which are struck on an at-need basis. These committees include:

- Faculty Activism Award
How to get in touch with the board
· Attend one of their meetings (all volunteers and members are welcome to attend.) The board currently meets every 2 weeks.
· Email them: board@opirgkingston.org
· Come to the Annual General Meeting that happens each March (details to be posted soon.)
How to join the board
· Generally, each year we are in need of some new board members.
· Applicants are required to fill out an application and to meet with members of the current board. This process allows all parties to ask questions and to get to know each other.
