Alternative Frosh Week is a multi week-long extravaganza of events co-ordinated by OPIRG Kingston and planned to follow the faculty-run frosh week activities.
Wednesday, Sept. 16th - Screening Under the Stars: Drool

Friday, Sept. 25th, 2-4pm – Book launch: The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy by Yves Engler
This book could change how you see Canada. Most of us believe this country’s primary role has been as peacekeeper or honest broker in difficult-to-solve disputes. But, contrary to the mythology of Canada as a force for good in the world, The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy sheds light on many dark corners.
Yves Engler is the author of two books: Canada in Haiti: Waging War on the Poor Majority (with Anthony Fenton) and Playing Left Wing: From Rink Rat to Student Radical
Location: Robert Sutherland Room, 2nd Floor of JDUC @corner of Union and University

Sunday, Sept. 27th - Radical Walking Tour of Kingston
Meet at the Grey House for a guided radical walking tour of downtown Kingston. This tour is designed to uncover Kingston’s function in the military economy, the prison-industrial complex, and the public-private corporate nexus housed at Queen’s University and downtown. The tour will also bring to light some of the stories of marginalized folks including Kingston’s black, Jewish, and queer communities. It will point to a few inspiring examples of resistance that have all in their own way fought for a different and better Kingston, one that is anti-oppressive, pro-community and pro-autonomy. Spend an hour familiarizing with Kingston’s history, sites, sounds, joys, and concerns.
12pm, meet at Greyhouse, 51 Bader Lane. Free!

5:30pm, Grey House, 51 Bader Lane, Free!

Monday, Oct 5th – Absoufian Abdelrazik Talk
6:30pm, Wilson Room, Downtown Library, 130 Johnson St, Free!

Ever wonder what Queen’s was like for Queer students before you got here? How about the roots of Kingston’s Queer community? With this event, two of Queen’s Alumni will be talking about their experiences at Queen’s!
5:30 - 8:30pm, Greyhouse, 51 Bader Lane. Free!

Update: Click here to find archived materials from this project online.

The Ontario Public Interest Research Interest Group, the Education on Queer Issues Project, the Women’s Centre, and the People’s History Project are hoping over the summer to gather the stories of folks who have used this house over the past many decades. Although we’ve only been here for 17 years, we know that for almost 40 years this house has provided safer spaces for marginalized folks and acted as a catalyst for change. We are seeking to collect the stories of your experiences in this house. Maybe you were involved in EQUIP, OPIRG, CUSEN, Amnesty International,The Women’s Centre, Kingston Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Association, or maybe you were in the Queen’s Homophile Association back in the day!

We are interested in collecting informal interviews with people, but we are also looking for any materials associated with groups and their activities who were operating out of the house, including pictures, promotional materials, posters, anything that will aid us in recapturing a sense of the past of the Grey House.

If you, or anyone you know would like to help collect materials, or talk to people about their experiences, or were involved here at the Grey House and would like to help with this project please contact us:

info@opirgkingston.org

Thanks so much.
