Friday April 11th, 7pm, Wilson Room at the Downtown Public Library (130 Johnson St)

In September 2000, Toronto police raided the women and trans positive bathhouse, the Pussy Palace, and laid charges against two of the volunteers. The organizers fought back, won, and sparked a whole lot of controversy. 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the Pussy Palace, an outlaw space for sex, queers, and a touch of education.

Janet Rowe is the founder of the Pussy Palace, a long-time advocate and educator around women’s sexual health, and currently the Program Manager at the 519, Toronto’s queer community centre.

JP Hornick is one of the two people charged in the Pussy Palace raid, a queer activist, writer and teacher.

This talk is co-sponsored by the Positive Space Program and the Queen’s Department of Women’s Studies. This is part of a Positive Space Speaker Series which was made possible by the Queen’s University Cold Beverage Exclusivity Fund.

The Positive Space Speaker Series presents Dr. Andil Gosine Tuesday March 25th, 6pm in Watson Hall Room 517 on:

“Men who have Sex with Men in Miss Diva’s Worlds: Notes on Heteronationalist Impulses in the Caribbean”

A recent trip to Trinidad and Tobago and a Sexuality Rights workshop in Barbados provide starting points for Dr. Gosine’s consideration of some ways in which heteronationalism takes shape in the Anglo-Caribbean, and may be facilitated (not challenged) by international development interventions and global gay and lesbian rights organizing.

Andil Gosine is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at York University. His research considers the articulated collaboration of ‘race’, gender, sexuality and class in various contexts, including international development, environmental politics and sexual cultures. His work has appeared in journals such as Topia Journal of Cultural Studies, Men and Masculinities, and Canadian Woman Studies, and he has contributed to the recently published collections Queer Online and Queer Youth Cultures, and the forthcoming Queer Ecology. Dr. Gosine is currently at work tracing transnational, feminist genealogies of ‘Men who have Sex with Men,’ intended for publication as a book next year.

This speaker series has been made possible through the Queen’s Cold Beverage Fund. For more information please contact info[at]opirgkingston.org. All are welcome!

TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE (DOR) Tuesday, November 20, 5-6 pm, Dunning 14

Every year since 1999, people in cities world-wide gather together to draw attention to the problem of anti-transgender violence and murder. Queen’s equip (education on queer issues project) is organizing this year’s TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE (DOR). It’s a day to mourn our losses for those who have been killed because of their gender variance.

The speaker, Julian Gregory, will touch upon this, as well as what it means to be gendered - variant or not. The talk will be between 30 and 40, minutes, with a discussion after. At 6:00pm a candle light vigil will be held behind Mac-Corry - between Mac-Corry and the music building. After the vigil, all are welcome to attend the coffeehouse (fundraiser) for Queen’s Women Empowerment Committee at 7:30 pm at the Tea Room (Union and Division). It runs until 10:30 pm.We hope you will join us!

For more information about Transgender Day of Remembrance see www.gender.org/remember/day/.
