Are you an artist, worker, student, unionist, activist or community member who is interested in the intersection of work and the arts?

Building on the success of the 2010 festival, the MayWorks Collective is seeking community members interested in planning next year’s festival. All are invited to bring ideas for events, workshops, performances, visual art, works in audio/film/video and new media.

The Kingston MayWorks Collective is a community collective of artists, workers, students, and interested parties who believe that exploring the links between art, labour, experience, and identity can bring important insights and powerful social change.

Spoken word workshop – back by popular demand

A second SPOKEN WORD workshop will be taking place on APRIL 19th on Queen’s Campus. Back by popular demand, this workshop is a way to fuse rhythm, poetry and your concerns in your words into a dynamic piece of performative poetry. The workshop includes a discussion on gender and social experiences in academia and the workforce, techniques and tips for potent writing as well as the opportunity to perform you piece at the Mayworks festival in early May.

This workshop is open to female identified individuals. The Spoken word workshop is free of charge and refreshments will be provided. Please confirm your interest with Lara at Equityco@sgps.ca asap.

Photography workshop for Queen’s workers

Note that due to lack of response from food and beverage workers, the photography workshop date and workers group has changed.

MayWorks Kingston is hosting workshops with acclaimed digital photography artists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge. The workshops aim to provide an opportunity for Queen’s University workers (staff, teaching assistants and fellows, and faculty) to express their experiences of work through digital photography.

Carole and Karl will facilitate a workshops on Saturday April 10th and Sunday April 11th from 11am-2pm each day. Workshops are free, though require registration and participation on both days. We aim to bring together a group of workers with diverse experiences, who wish to explore the impact of the various changes that are occuring in universities today, and at Queen’s specifically. Individuals who wish to participate anonymously will be accommodated.

Carole and Karl have collaborated with various trade unions and community organizations in the production of their staged photographic work over the past 25 years. Their work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally in both the trade union movement and art galleries and museums. MayWorks Kingston Calling on Local Artists

The Kingston MayWorks Festival of Labour and the Arts, is currently seeking submissions from Kingston and the surrounding area for two art exhibitions, in which works will be showcased over the course of the festival and through the month of May. Works will be displayed at Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre and The Sleepless Goat Cafe and Workers-Cooperative that fit within the stated goals and themes of the Mayworks Collective (click here), and the spirit of the Art Policy found on the Sleepless Goat’s website ( http://thesleeplessgoat.ca/art_policy.html ). We encourage submissions from artists of marginalized identities and work experiences.

Please submit works in jpeg, or by linking to them directly if they are hosted online, and include a brief artist’s statement, description of your piece (including materials used, and dimensions) and bio.  Submissions close Monday, April 12th, at 4:00 pm and should be sent with “Art Showcase” in the subject line to mayworkskingston@gmail.com

All submissions will be reviewed by the curatorial committee. Successful artists will be responsible for costs of transporting their artwork to the showcase venue. Selected artists will be provided a modest honorarium.

Soul Shakedown March 20th!

MayWorks Kingston is hosting workshops with acclaimed digital photography artists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge.

From the series 'Ill Wind' produced through a series of visual workshops with health care workers, members of CUPE, Carole Condé + Karl Beveridge, 2001.

The workshops aim to provide an opportunity for food and beverage workers (people who work in bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants, fast food establishments) to express their experiences of work through digital photography.

Carole and Karl will facilitate a workshop on photography on Saturday March 27th and image editing on Sunday March 28th. Workshops are free, though require registration and participation on both days. We aim to bring together a group of workers with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Book Launch: Harvest Pilgrims

Harvest Pilgrims tells the little-known story of Canada’s migrant workers. The photographs in the “Harvest Pilgrims” collection have been highly acclaimed internationally through many publications and exhibitions, including a travelling show curated by the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography that opened in Mexico City. Vincenzo Pietropaolo will present a slideshow of his work on the subject, and talk about the project, which has been 20 years in the making.

Spoken Word Workshop for Female Identified Queen’s Graduate Students!

The aim of the workshop is to facilitate discussion around female graduate students experiences of work and empower their voices through the use of spoken word and performative poetry. We are looking for volunteers for graphic design, event planning, promotions and more! We are also seeking suggestions for events you would like to see during the festival.
