Anti-Racism and Islamophobia

The section is a collection of articles dealing with racial issues in the community and the police force. It also contains information on a new kind of racism emerging against Muslims known as Islamophobia. This folder has been divided into the following sections:

General Issues
This section contains information regarding racial conflicts and marginalizations faced by individuals in the Kingston community. One of the most significant events is the rise in hate groups’ activities in the early 90s. Some of the flyers distributed by Heritage Front (a highly organized, popular, and Nazi supporting hate group) throughout Queen’s University and the Kingston community have been filed in this section. An information page can be found titled “Queen’s Against the Nazis”, which outlines the opposition and some of the negative responses to the activities conducted by the Heritage Front. Corresponding letters to the Anti-Racist Action Kingston are also filed in this section. Additionally, there are posters and flyers about organized talks, rallies, parades, information sessions, etc., that have been conducted throughout time at Queen’s University for students and the community members of Kingston.

Racial Profiling
Kingston has been marked in history as the world’s first town/city to conduct a study about racial profiling conducted in the police force, which leads to unnecessary suspicion and biased justice system against racial minorities. This section contains news articles that were published in response to the effort put up by the Kingston Police in conducting the racial profiling study. A report of the study can be found as well. Through this study, Kingston has inspired many other communities in Canada (including Toronto) and other parts of the world to address the issue of racial profiling in the police force.

Islamophobia

Islamophobia is the new form of racism emerging after the events of 9/11 against people of Middle-Eastern and South Asian background. In this section, one can find the study conducted by Taskforce Canada in raising awareness about Islamophobia experienced by students in universities, including Queen’s. Students were invited to talk about their experiences related to Islamophobia and a report was published. The report notes some of the current concerns of students and future recommendations that need to be followed to make a safer community for all students.
