Queer Issues

For a brief history of queer issues in Kingston, please click here.

This section has been divided into the following:

In The News
This section includes newspaper articles that have been published in the local newspapers about queer issues. The articles have been filed chronologically, starting with the most recent. Perhaps the most significant article is the one published on October 29, 1975 titled “Kingston ‘Gays’ refusing to hide.” It portrays how activism against homophobia has started more than 30 years ago in Kingston. As one goes through the articles, it can be seen that slowly over the years, people in the community have “opened up” to people of different sexual orientation. They are not constantly marginalizing them but instead are appreciative of their efforts into bringing themselves out into the community. Important to note are the articles showing that in the early 90s, hate crimes started gaining momentum in Kingston and the queer community was a common target of such crimes.

Pamphlets, Flyers, Letters, etc.

This section contains information about educational seminars, social events, legal brochures, and other resources that outline the activism on behalf of queer individuals. The articles signify the efforts made by active members and groups of the community into helping queer individuals come out and express themselves freely.

Lesbian and Gay Association
This section contains information regarding the Coalition of Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (CLGRO). This section mainly contains letters that have been sent by the coordinators of the group in Kingston and any letters that have been sent to them as well. These letters outline the specific events carried out by the group over the years in Kingston. There are also excellent recommendations made in these letters that can help overcome homophobia and help create a welcoming environment for people of every sexual background in Kingston and Queen’s community.
